Brooks Resources is proud to sponsor the upcoming Central Oregon Community College Season of Nonviolence, with various events and activities being held January – March 2023. Created to bring together community partners to educate and empower communities on how to use nonviolent methods to create a more peaceful world, the event series includes lectures, book discussion groups and facilitated community conversations. It is the 15th year Central Oregon Community College has hosted the program to honor the Season of Nonviolence.

One event that we are particularly excited about is a presentation from speakers, Ndaba Mandela and Ilyasah Shabazz, “Lessons From Our Fathers: Continuing the Legacies of Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X.” The speakers will share inspirational stories and empowering lessons advocating for social justice. Ilyasah Shabazz is the daughter of Malcolm X, a professor, and author. Ndaba Mandela is the grandson of Nelson Mandela and founder of Africa Rising Foundation.

The lecture takes place on Thursday, January 26th at 6:30 p.m. at the Tower Theater in downtown Bend. It is free and open to the public, however, registration is required for in-person attendance as well as streaming. If you are interested in attending, visit http://cocc.edu/seasonofnonviolence

The Season of Nonviolence “honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Wilma Mankiller and their nonviolent work to advocate for human rights.” Other Central Oregon events during the three month season include book discussion groups and facilitated community conversations throughout the region. The purpose is to bring a community together in order to educate and empower individuals on how to use nonviolent methods to create a more peaceful world. We are honored to support this important work in our community.
